Mangaluru: MCC official sentenced to jail for disproportionate assets

Mangaluru: In a corruption-related case, an official of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) was found guilty of possessing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.
After reviewing the evidence presented, the third additional district and sessions court here pronounced that S.E. Manjunatha Swamy (50) guilty of corruption and imposed a jail term for the crime.
Judge B B Jakati sentenced the accused, to a simple 5-year jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 35 lakh. If the fine is not paid, the jail term would be extended by another year.
The accused was working as an assistant town planning officer of MCC, reports said.
In 2007, Mangaluru Lokayukta police had raided the premises of Majunatha Swamy, acting on a complaint about him amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. Based on the evidence collected a case was filed against the official.
