Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr. Rajendra K V on Thursday, December 23 informed that more than 1,15,000 people have not received the first dose of covid vaccine and that about 16 lakh residents have been inoculated in the district against Covid.

Addressing a press conference at the deputy commissioner’s office here on Thursday, he urged people to get vaccinated in the emergent situation of omicron spread in the district. “It is essential that everyone gets vaccinated,” he said.

Some in the community are not coming forward to get vaccines. “Steps are being taken to create awareness and persuade such people through clerics, gram panchayat members, and legislators,” he said.

He also urged the people not to let their guard down against covid. “Though the positivity rate is low in the district, the public should voluntarily give importance to contain the spread of the virus during festivals, other celebrations, or public gatherings. As cases of Omicron are spreading very rapidly, the public should follow the Covid appropriate behavior,” the DC said.

As of now, The district is showing a declining trend with the positivity rate being 0.26%.  The number of active cases is 164 and 35 among them are hospitalized, he said.

Omicron source yet to be ascertained

Dr. Rajendra also informed that the source of the omicron cases found in the district is yet to be ascertained. All those infected are in good health, he said and added that they will be released from the isolation as soon as they get negative after doing RTPCR tests twice after 10 days.

Students returning after Christmas and New Year from outside the state, have to compulsorily produce a negative RTPCR report on arrival in the district. “Educational institutions and hostels have been instructed to keep them isolated for 7 days,” he said,
