Udupi: Three prominent places in Udupi district- the fast-growing tourist destination of Udupi town, education hub Manipal and the scenic port of Malpe – are to be shortlisted for development under the Smart Cities Mission.
The development work will be conducted under the PPP model. A Bengaluru-based firm has been contracted which has prepared a blueprint and is working on the Detailed Project Report.
“The plan to make Manipal a smart city was long overdue. Now the scope of the project has expanded to include Udupi and Malpe with private sector assistance. A Bengaluru firm has already prepared the blueprint. The Smart City Mission will facilitate in the creation of better infrastructure for Malpe, Manipal and Udupi.”
– Raghupati Bhat, MLA, Udupi
Plans include international-standard infrastructure, traffic control, safety, prioritization for local investments and a multi-level parking unit to ease Udupi and Malpe’s parking and traffic woes, charging points for new electric vehicles, panic buttons at selected sites, LP cameras to check traffic violations, bus and auto bays, cycling tracks, e-toilets, smart lounges and many more public amenities.
