Mangaluru: A Filipino crew member aboard ‘MV Broog’ was evacuated to land by the Coast Guard on Thursday after the crew member suffered a medical emergency.
A mail from the master of the Japanese Flag vessel was received by the coast guard regarding need for medical evacuation of the crew member Regoita Arwen Alcalen. The vessel was then sailing at a distance of 300 nautical miles from the coast for Mangaluru.
Apparently, the vessel was sailing from Ras Laffan, Qatar to Futussu, Japan, with LNG in its cargo, when en-route, the crew member developed an inflamed appendix. Therefore an email requesting medical repatriation of the crew member was sent to the coast guard.
The Coast Guard directed the vessel to come head towards New Mangalore Port and meanwhile alerted GAC Shipping (India) Pvt Ltd which is the local agent for the vessel and asked them to make arrangements for safe medical evacuation off New Mangalore Port.
Eventually, the patient was shifted to A J Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in the city for treatment. The Filipino crew member has undergone a surgery for the issue and presently his condition is stable, inform sources from the hospital.
