Udupi: MLA Yashpal Suvarna has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Principal Secretary to the Government to delay the commencement of schools by one week due to an acute drinking water shortage in many parts of the state.
The Education Department had previously scheduled the reopening of primary and high schools for the academic year 2023-24 on May 31.
The delayed onset of the monsoon this year has exacerbated the drinking water problem in various parts of the state, including Dakshaina Kannada and Udupi. Insufficient drinking water facilities in many schools will make it challenging to provide students with clean drinking water, maintain hygiene, and mid-day meals, he said.
Suvarna emphasized in his appeal that the health and daily activities of students would be adversely affected by the prevailing weather conditions.
In light of the gravity of the situation, Suvarna requested the government to instruct the education department to postpone the commencement of schools by one week.
