Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Channabasappa informed that the fire that broke out at the Pacchanady dumping yard on Monday afternoon has been doused and efforts are on to put out the smoke that has engulfed the surrounding areas.
Five fire tenders were deployed at the spot to douse the fire. The operation also involved the use of four JCBs, 10 tippers, and 10 tankers, with workers wearing face masks for protection.
Efforts are still ongoing to put out the smoke by pouring water and mud over the landfill where the smoke was seen, said Channabasappa.
Meanwhile, locals have expressed concern that the smoke could cause health problems. Pointing out that three instances of fire breakouts had occurred at Pacchanady dumping yard, Congress leader and former MLA Mohiuddin Bawa demanded a permanent solution to the issue while warning of holding a protest on March 17.
Further, Bawa alleged that the local MLA has not visited the site and urged the corporation not to acquire another 10 acres of land for the landfill, as it could affect temples and places of worship surrounding the area.
