Mulki’s Dr Hamsaraj Shetty awarded MBE in UK

Mulki: Dr. Hamsaraj Shetty, originally from Mulki, has been honored with the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) award, one of the United Kingdom’s highest accolades.

This prestigious award was presented by His Majesty King Charles at Windsor Castle, the official residence of the British monarch. Dr. Shetty’s family, including his wife Lata H. Shetty, son, and daughter, attended the ceremony.

Dr. Shetty, son of the late Gundalu Mahabala Shetty, a retired principal, and Ratna G.M. Shetty, has had a distinguished career as a senior consultant physician at Cardiff University Hospital of Wales. He has been a prominent figure in stroke care services in Wales for nearly three decades.

Described by his peers as passionate, dedicated, and a champion for stroke services, Dr. Shetty has made significant contributions to the field. His efforts have been recognized with several awards, including the inaugural Welsh Stroke Excellence Award at the Welsh Stroke Conference in 2018.

A graduate of Mysore Medical College in India, Dr. Shetty trained as a lecturer in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics before moving to Cardiff. He briefly served as a consultant physician in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, before returning to the University Hospital of Wales in 1995. Dr. Shetty played a pivotal role in the development of stroke services in Cardiff and Vale and across Wales, founding the Welsh Association of Stroke Physicians in 1998.

According to the Cardiff and Vale university Health Board website, Dr. Shetty’s contributions extend beyond clinical practice. He was a member of various significant committees and organizations, including the Welsh Government’s Stroke Implementation Group, the British Association of Stroke Physicians, and the UK Stroke Forum National Committee. He also served as the Royal College of Physicians’ Regional Advisor for Stroke Medicine until 2015 and led multiple key multicentre stroke trials.
