Bagalkote: Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol on January 12 said that discussion is underway on setting up two-tiered Panchayati Raj system in the State and eliminating the taluk panchayats.
Speaking after inaugurating the Jan Sevak conference to be hosted by the district BJP in the city on Wednesday, he added that as a result of Ramakrishna Hegde’s far-sightedness, the panchayat raj system in the State was a model to the entire country. But after Veerappa Moily became the chief minister, the system was inundated with ignorants.
In the Panchayat Raj envisages a two-tier system. This system, the zilla parishads and mandala panchayats was disciplined and made it a lot easy for rural development. When Ramakrishna Hegde implemented the system for the first time in the entire country, the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi sent a team from the Centre to study it. Veraappa Moilly killed this system,” he said.
“The panchayat system has three tiers presently. These panchayats receive no grants and are more of a burden. Thus, we have recently discussed in party forums to eliminate them. A final decision regarding it will be taken soon,” the DyCM said.
