Mangaluru: Though the Thota Bengre gang rape came to light late, it is not a recent phenomenon that visitors to Tannirbavi and Bengre areas are faced by harassment and robbery! The extent is such that, once there was a robbery attempt on Dakshina Kannada (DK) Deputy Commissioner itself.
Robbery attempt on DC
In 2003-2005 term, the then DK DC was newly married and was visiting Tannirbavi on vacation. During that time, some miscreants tried to rob him. In the backdrop of the case, the DC had taken stringent action and arrested several miscreants. If the action taken then was continued illegal activities, murder and other criminal activities would have been controlled. But, the recent incident shows the situation to be otherwise.
Drug menace
There is an abundant availability of drugs here because of which criminal activities have increased. Tannirbavi, Bengre is a tourist destination and harassment of miscreants occurs here regularly.
Will attempt to establish a police station
Strict action has been directed in connection to the rape case. Attempts will be taken for the sanctioning of a fully fledged police station, said D Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru South MLA.
