Udupi: Inter-State fish-laden trucks cause COVID-19 scare in district

Team Udayavani, May 2, 2020, 2:30 PM IST

Udupi: Trucks coming into the district from neighbouring Goa and Maharashtra bringing fishes are becoming a cause of fear amongst the residents of Udupi, Kundapura, Trasi and Gangolli.

Most of these trucks are from Maharashtra, the worst affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goa has already banned the entry of such trucks from Maharashtra.

Residents fear that the truckers and their staff in these trucks are endangering Udupi district which was recently declared Green Zone.

Locals also allege that because Maharashtra not banning light fishing, huge catches from Ratnagiri are drawing fish merchants from here to bring in fishes from there.

Additionally, it is alleged, that local truckers are being paid heftily to transport the fishes to the markets here.
