A local court sentenced a man to prison for obstructing government officials from performing their duties.

The accused, identified as Surendra, has been sentenced to 9 months and 10 days imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 2,000. The judgment was delivered by the City’s Principal CJ and JMFC Court Judge Deepa.

The incident took place at Bellampalli village in Udupi talk when government officials were collecting swabs of primary contacts of a woman who had tested positive for COVID-19. Surendra, the woman’s husband and a primary contact, not only stopped officials from collecting the sample, but also verbally abused them, issued death threats, and also damaged their car.  Hiriyadka Police Station Inspector later registered a case against Surendra and submitted a charge sheet in court.

After a thorough investigation, the charges against Surendra were proven, leading to his conviction. The case was argued by Senior Assistant Public Prosecutor Jayanthi K. on behalf of the government.
