Udupi: Man sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering friend over trivial reason

Udupi: A court here convicted a man of murder that took place 5 years ago and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Principal District and Sessions Judge Shantaveera Shivappa, in his judgement, held the murder accused Prashant alias Pacchu alias Mani (31), a resident of Arur, guilty of the crimes charged against him in the case. Prashant was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000.
Prashant was accused of killing his friend over a trivial matter at Petri, Cherkadi village of Brahmavar taluk. The charge sheet said that on March 1, 2017, Prashant had asked his friend Prakash Naik (38) for money. When Prakash refused, Prashant got furious and stabbed Prakash with a knife, which resulted in Prakash’s death.
On the complaint of the victim’s wife, Brahmavar police registered a case. The chargesheet was submitted on May 27, 2017.
After perusing the evidence presented and the eyewitness examination, the court pronounced its verdict, convicting Prashant of the offense.
The convict was sentenced to life imprisonment and a Rs 50 thousand fine for murder; a 3-year imprisonment and a Rs 10,000 fine under ST Atrocities Act.
Convicted in POCSO case also
The convict, Prashant, has been previously sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in a POCSO case. Prashant had committed the murder when he was out on bail in the POCSO case.
In the month of April 2018, he had displayed his violent nature in court. During the hearing of the POCSO case, when the public prosecutor appealed for maximum punishment, the accused threw his shoe in court. A separate case in this regard was registered. Thereafter, all hearings involving Prashant were conducted through video conferencing.
