Udupi: The dream of having a police training centre and a public school for the education of the children of cops in Karavali and Malnad region is showing signs of becoming a reality. The process of handing over of the land for the two project has started and hence, has created a feeling of optimism among the police staffs.

During the 2013-14 budget, Rs 75 lakh was sanctioned for the creation of these two separate buildings. But even after the passing of 6 years the problem regarding the required land had not be resolved.

20 acre land

Several years had passed since the Deputy Commissioner had submitted a proposal to Mysuru division’s Regional Commissioner to release the 36 acres of land available at Uppoor taluk in Udupi from Paramboku title and provide it to the Police Department. But it did not bear fruit. Now the process has been started once again. The regional commissioner’s office has informed that more land than required for the project will not be provided. Hence the district administration is getting ready to re-submit another proposal limiting the land requirement 20 aces from 36 acres.

Temporary training centres

Candidates who have been selected or the police force form Udupi, DK and most of the other districts are provided training at the District Armed Reserve Force office and grounds. These are temporary training centres and do not have the all the necessary basic facilities. 11 batches have passed out from Udupi since 2000. A maximum of 100 candidates may be trained per batch at Udupi and DK respectively. If in case a full equipped training centre is created, it will be possible to train more than 400 candidates at a time.

Use of public school

If a police public school is created , the children of police official and staffs from DK, Udupi and surrounding districts will get education for free and at a concession price. A local educational society will be created for its maintenance. In Udupi district alone there are around 900 cops. Such a school is available only in Dharwad.

The plan was not implemented since the land was not provided. The sanctioned amount has been deposited with the Karnataka State Police Housing And Infrastructure Development Corporation. Attempts are being made to finalise the land – Nisha James, SP

Earlier a proposal had been submitted to the regional commissioner. Now once again our opinion has been requested and we will act immediately – Hepsiba Rani Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner, Udupi
