Udupi: The Directorate of Medical Education has decided to build three new government medical colleges in Udupi, Ramanagaram and Bengaluru Rural districts. These colleges may commence admissions from the 2021-22 academic year.
With 40 medical colleges as of now, Karnataka has the highest number of medical colleges in the country. However, these colleges are unevenly distributed. Except in Udupi, Ramanagaram and Bengaluru Rural districts, all other districts have at least one State or Union government-run medical colleges.
The move to set up medical colleges in these three districts is to mitigate this problem, confirmed Deputy Chief Minister and Medical Education Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan.
Previously, four new medical colleges for Chikkamagaluru, Chikkaballapur, Haveri and Yadgir districts were approved which are expected to commence from the academic year of 2020-21. These colleges will add 600 more medical seats to the state from the same academic year.
