Whatsapp sees 70 percent drop in viral forwards after imposing limit

Earlier this month, WhatsApp introduced a limit on frequently forwarded messages to one chat at a time to curb the spread of fake messages. Now, it has seen a massive 70 percent drop in such posts being shared or going viral globally

WhatsApp reported that it saw a 70 percent reduction in the number of messages that are highly forwarded on the platform globally. Highly forwarded means any message that has already been forwarded more than five times

WhatsApp had first introduced forward limits on the platform in July 2018, after rumours and messages on the platform led to a spate of mob lynching across the country. Also, in 2019 WhatsApp had labelled the forwarded messages with double arrows so that the receiver that the messages are not original but forwarded from other sources.

The messaging app is also working on a feature that would allow users to verify the messages they have received on Google
