Youth accused of snatching chain from old lady caught

Udupi: A youth accused of pulling away gold chain from the neck of Lalita Naik on September 12 has been arrested by the Manipal police, produced in the court and remanded to 15 days judicial custody. The accused is identified as Praveen Naik (32) from Manchikumeri.

Incident synopsis

On the morning of Sep 12, Lalita Naik was walking by the side of road from near the agricultural field at Manchikody when a person wearing raincoat and helmet approached and suddenly attempted to pull the gold chain she was wearing around her neck.

Frightened, the woman attempted to flee the attacker and fell down into the field, but nonetheless, the accused returned to her as she was getting up and  pulled at the chain again. But did not give up the fight and held on tightly to the chain, a piece of the chain had remained in her hands, while the robber had made good his escape with the remaining piece.

The victim had identified the accused and the gold chain has been recovered from the accused.
