Mangaluru: Out of 93 CCTV cameras installed by the traffic police last year, only five of them are functioning now.
This came into light after the police officials themselves checked the functioning of the cameras and found that there were no steps taken for the annual maintenance of these cameras.
The commissioner has written a letter to the respective contractor regarding the issue.
The recent check by the officials revealed that the images captured by the cameras are unclear during the day and at night the cameras are unable to capture any images.
Also, the CCTV cameras that have been removed for road and footpath development work haven’t been reinstalled. The cameras at the footpath of Ladyhill and Lalbagh junctions were removed too, however, the reinstallation is being done now.
The receivers of cameras that were installed on private properties have been removed by the locals, which has caused problems for the traffic police department.
Under the smart city project, 15 ultra-modern quality CCTV cameras are being installed at 15 junctions in the city. One has been installed at Kadri-Mallikatte junction, while the CTV camera installation at Ladyhill junction is in progress. The others will be fixed at Padil, Morgansgate, Pumpwell, Rao and Rao Circle, Padavinangady, Marnamikatte, Kottara Chowki, Lalbagh, Kavoor, near St Agnes College, Kankanady, Bendore, and Kadri Circuit House.
Under the smart city project, a separate budget is kept aside for fixing CCTV cameras and signal lights. Apart from this, a report has been submitted to the Smart City organization to install 900 CCTV cameras in the city.
