Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world lies between Nepal and Sikkim in India. This mountain is surrounded by various rivers from all sides and was considered to be the highest mountain earlier before 1853.

Rumour is that peaks as high as Kanchenjunga are haunted by ghosts and the major reason behind this is that almost 25% of people die midway and that there are absolutely no ways of taking the bodies down. So one who dies in Kangchenjunga, stays in Kangchenjunga.

Below are some interesting ghost stories and myths related to this mountain peak in India.

  • Kangchenjunga literally means ‘five treasures of snow’  where the treasures are salt, gold, invincible armor, precious stones, and sacred sculpture.
  • The people staying at the base of the mountain call themselves Lepcha or the children of the snow.
  • It is also believed that spirits live at the peak of Kangchenjunga and that is the reason why no one stands near the peak.
  • Locals believe that there is a rakshasa who resides on the slopes of the mountain.
  • A British Global expedition in 1925 recorded the appearance of a different bipedal creature and since then believers believe that there does exist a mountain man or a yeti who lives in Kangchenjunga.

The expeditions to Kangchenjunga were banned by the Indian government in the year 2000, as the Buddhists regarded the mountain as a deity and that they did not want to exploit their religious understanding of things for the sake of tourism.
