Dinesh Pai, 60 peddles his bicycle around Gopalpura and Subrahmanya Nagar wards of Udupi, identifying families which have contracted Covid-19, checking on them, and delivering groceries.
Dinesh Pai nominated as a councilor of Udupi CMC, despite the open-heart surgery he underwent about ten years ago, keeps a tab of those who might go hungry if he doesn’t go out and deliver essentials in his bicycle.
Pai plays the role of Covid warrior from 8 am to 1 pm. He buys groceries and visits houses where patients are recovering.
Pai has so far provided more than 50 grocery kits to the needy.
Apart from helping the needy, Pai conducts surveys to find out whose income source is hit by the lockdown and reaches out to assist them.
Pai says that he merely is a postman who delivers the essentials to the needy as almost all the essentials are bought from the donors’ money.
Pai has helped many people avail themselves the government services from pension to availing BPL cards for the poor.
Publicity isn’t the goal here, says Pai. “A friend of mine came to me and said that if people don’t know about you, how will you be a role model to others?”
Pai is currently 70 years old and lives along with his wife.
