Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation has decided to process the waste from the Pachanady dumping yard that got dumped at certain places due to the 2019 disaster through the ‘bio mining’ method at a cost of Rs 53 crores.
After the disaster, about 10 lakh tonnes of garbage has accumulated causing a challenge to the Corporation to process it.
The courts had also demanded strict action on the issue.
After many deliberations, bio mining method was finally decided upon.
The Corporation has already written a letter to KUIDFC for financial assistance, which has been provisionally approved.
The total time of the project will be about 4 to 5 years. Tenders have already been called for it with the last date being August 9.
After the 2019 disaster, a barrier wall was built to prevent further disasters. A tank was also built to store wastewater from the waste collected there and CCTVs cameras were installed to track unauthorized garbage disposal.
Bio mining is a biodegradable waste processing method. Waste is separated and all non-insoluble waste is sent to cement factories for reuse.
