Yadgir: A married woman was set ablaze for resisting sexual assault in the Yadgir district. The victim in the case has been identified as Palamma Mareppa Sakri (23) and the accused is named Gangappa Basappa Aralolli, a resident of Chowdeshwarihala village.
According to the police complaint, the shocking incident took place on Monday morning in a village near Shahpur town, when the victim’s husband had gone out.
The accused attempted to rape the woman when she was asleep. She resisted his attempts and this enraged the accused further. In a fit of rage, he assaulted her, doused her in petrol, and set her ablaze, the police report said.
According to sources, the neighbors who were nearby immediately extinguished the flames and rushed the woman to the hospital. However, she breathed her last breath due to burn injury complications at the Kalburgi hospital.
Surapura police managed to record a statement of the victim and have registered a case in the matter. They have launched a manhunt for the accused.
Surprisingly, the accused had made similar attempts earlier too. According to the police, Gangappa pestered the victim to have intimate affairs for a long time. He had even assaulted her when her advances were resisted. The victim had complained to the village elders who had then warned Gangappa not to harass the married woman. She, however, had not registered any complaint with the police.
