Mangaluru/Udupi: The twin district of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed fairly good attendance levels in classes 1 to 5 on the first day of school reopening.

Schools in Dakshina Kannada registered an average of 70 percent attendance, while Udupi recorded 80 percent on the first day.

In the Udupi district, 14,623 students in Class-I, 14,431 in Class-II, 14,766 in Class-III, 14,051 in Class-IV, and 15,289 in Class-V attended school on Monday.

Children who stepped into the classrooms after a long gap of one and half years were cordially welcomed. Teachers made special efforts to attract students back to schools. The classrooms were decked up with interesting decorations. Some school teachers distributed sweets and chocolates to the young learners.

The Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Block Education Officers (BEOs), and other officials of the education department visited schools to make sure covid guidelines were strictly followed in schools.

DDPIs of both districts told Udayavani that alternate day classes are being held in schools where the class strength is high. Those who are apprehensive to go to schools can continue learning in online mode, they added.

Till Friday, the schools will be open for half-day from 10 AM to 1.30 PM. The full-day classes (from 10 AM to 4.30 PM) will resume from November 2 and mid-day meals will be served.
