Mandya: Husband and wife die after falling into open well in K R Pete

KR Pete: In a tragic incident, a couple fell into an open well and drowned at Singapura Village here.

The deceased have been identified as Shankar Murthi (38), son of Topayya, and his wife Vasantha Kumari (33).

It is gathered that Vasantha Kumari accidentally fell into an open well when she was on the way to water the fields on Thursday night. Hearing the loud splash, in a hurry, her husband Shankar also jumped into the well to rescue Vasantha. Both did not know how to swim and allegedly drowned in the deep waters of the well.

Other farmers who heard the noise tried to rescue the couple, but couldn’t due to the darkness. The fire tenders were called in and the mortal remains were lifted later.

The couple’s two children — a 12-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter — have been orphaned overnight due to the tragedy.

K R Pete police have registered a case in this regard.
