Bikarnakatta accident: One youth declared brain dead; family decides to donate organs

Mangaluru: One among the two youth injured after their two-wheeler hit the divider has been declared brain dead. The Family has decided to donate the organs.

The youth who was brain dead is Dheeraj (25).

“Despite all efforts to save him, the prognosis was poor and he did not show any signs of recovery. Our panel of experts conducted a battery of tests to assess whether there was any brain stem activity on him twice at 6 hours intervals. First brain dead declaration was done at 1:30 pm and second at 8:00 pm on May 30,” the hospital said in a press statement.

“The Father and relatives of the deceased has now come forward to donate his organs to save other needy patients life. The Father of the deceased has given formal consent to donate his organs namely heart/heart valves, liver, and Kidney in the presence of Jeevasarthakathe (SOTTO),” the release added.

Case details:

Two youths were severely injured after their two-wheeler hit the divider at Bikarnakatta on Sunday, May 29.

The injured were Dheeraj and Ganesh. It is said a rickshaw driver who was passing by the road noticed the two of them lying on the road and admitted them to a nearby hospital.

Updates:

Unfortunately, Dheeraj died of a cardiac arrest on May 31, while on life support at the hospital before the organs could be harvested. In such circumstances, organ donation is not possible, doctors said, and canceled the plans to harvest the organs.

Sources said, only the eyes of Dheeraj will be harvested and transplanted into needy patients.
