Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced an ex gratia amount of Rs 5 Lakh each to the kin of three persons who died after consuming contaminated water in Raichur.

Speaking to the press here on Monday, the CM said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. The government has taken the incident seriously and the Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KWSSB) has been asked to hold a thorough investigation and submit a technical report, he said.

Bommai said a DySP rank office-led police investigation to find if there was any dereliction of duty by government officials.

Three persons had died and more than 60 fell ill after consuming contaminated water supplied in Raichur city in May this year. The incident had drawn the ire of the locals who demanded action against officials for failing to supply clean drinking water.

Locals had blamed the water supplied from Rampuru Reservoir for people falling sick.

According to media reports Superintendent of the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Dr. Bhaskar had said that 62 people were admitted due to dehydration, following vomiting, and diarrhea.
