Belthangady: A tanker broke down on the Charmadi Ghat causing a huge traffic snarl on the national Highway 73 on Tuesday night.

The tanker carrying fuel developed a technical snag on the 10th turn on the Charmadi Ghat highway at around 8.30 PM on Tuesday. The stationary truck blocked the lanes of the highway, causing a traffic jam on the ghat section.

Charmadi Ghat has been the alternate route to Bengaluru with the closure of Shiradi Ghat due to a landslide. The buses plying on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route were especially affected. Passengers had a harrowing time as they were stuck on the highway for the whole night, with no mobile or internet connectivity.

Hoysala team of the Belthagady police arrived on the scene and took action to clear the traffic congestion.

The tanker was moved with the help of a crane later, and the traffic was cleared by 5 AM. Currently, normal traffic movement is observed on the highway.
