Sexual harassment case: Fast track court convicts, sentences accused to 5 years in prison

Mulki: A fast track court in Dakshina Kannada, on Tuesday, held a man guilty of sexually harassing a schoolgirl and sentenced him to prison under the provisions of the POCSO Act.

The accused, Vijay alias Umesha of Hosakaveri near Kinnigoli, was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 for one of the charges against him and one year of imprisonment and Rs 1,000 in fine for another charge.

According to the police charge sheet, the convict ferried the victim, a differently-abled girl studying in class 5, to school in Kinnigoli. He would take the girl to a secluded area near Shibarooru road and sexually harass her. A complaint in this regard was filed at the Mulki police station in the year 2019.

The then-Sub Inspector of Mulki, Ananthapadmanabha, had filed a charge sheet in the case after a thorough investigation.
