Panaji: Apart from the sandy beaches, the one thing that Goa was famous for was its extremely low alcohol prices in India. Well, that won’t be so anymore. Goa government increased the excise duty on beer by 10–12 rupees per bulk liter while maintaining the same rate on hard liquor.
The action comes at a time when the Maharashtra government has tightened restrictions on the transport of alcoholic beverages into the state. Maharashtra has vowed to prosecute those who carry liquor from Goa into the state under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act.
The decision will further aggravate the liquor industry, which has previously stated that the state’s alcohol prices are no longer the cheapest in the nation.
