Renowned writer M S Prabhakara (Kamaroopi) no more

Bengaluru: Veteran journalist, and writer  M S Prabhakara, known by his pen name Kamaroopi in Kannada literary circles passed away on Thursday following a brief illness.

Motanahalli Surappa Prabhakar was born in 1936 in Motanahalli village situated 12 km from Kolar.

He joined Central College in Bangalore and after earning his English master’s degree, he worked as a teacher.

He first worked as an English professor at Karnataka University in Dharwad before moving to Guwahati University in Assam.

During that time, Guwahati University was being targeted by the authorities as it was a hotbed of extremist activities. To avoid being arrested, Prabhakar traveled from Guwahati to Mumbai.

Later, he joined Mumbai’s Economic and Political Weekly and began his career as a journalist. After working there for seven years, he was hired by The Hindu newspaper in 1983 as their special reporter for Assam.

He received the Karnataka State Award in 2018 for his achievements in the field of literature.

His major literary works are ‘Eku Tola Punugu and Other Stories’, short novels Kudure Motte’ and Anjikinyatakayya.
