Custom sleuths seize Rs 98L worth gold from passenger at MIA

Customs officials at Mangaluru International Airport on Monday apprehended a passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi and seized 1,579 grams of gold of 24-carat purity valued at Rs. 98,68,750 from his possession.

The passenger had arrived in Mangaluru via Air India Express flight IX 816 on January 8. Based on suspicious movement, customs sleuths intercepted him and while frisking his body, a beep sound emerged from his pelvis region.

It was found that 5 oval-shaped objects containing gold in paste form were concealed in his rectum. It was extracted by heating process.

The passenger was arrested and produced before the Magistrate.
