No hike in property tax, clarifies BBMP Chief Commissioner

Bengaluru: BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath clarified that there will be no increase in property tax under the jurisdiction of Brihat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
The clarification was issued in the backdrop of viral videos on social media claiming that property tax would be hiked from April 1. Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath termed the claims made in the video as “fake” and appealed to the public not to heed such news.
In a press statement, Giri Nath said that the city police commissioner has been asked to take action against those who uploaded fake news and spread it on the internet.
A video was posted on Instagram on March 13 from a handle operated by Anurag Singh claiming that the property taxes in the state capital have been hiked and would come into effect from April 1. The video had gone viral on social media.
BBMP Chief Commissioner said that the claims made in the video were blatantly false. There is no increase in property tax for any reason. There is no increase in property tax under BBMP from April 1. The property tax was revised in 2016, and the current property tax rates are in effect and will continue to be. Property taxpayers should not be alarmed in any way, he said.
A letter has been written to the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner to take legal action against those who spread false news regarding Property Tax, he added.
The Chief Commissioner of the corporation, Tushar Giri Nath, urged the citizens not to fall for such false news.
