Karnataka Govt to drop Steel Flyover project amid Govindaraju diary controversy

Bengaluru: Karnataka state government has decided to cancel steel flyover project in a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. An official announcement is expected to be made by the concerned department later today, said media reports. The decision came amid allegations that the Congress Party led Karnataka state government has received an unaccounted amount of Rs 65 crores while preparing plan for the project. The information on irregularities was leaked from the diary of present Congress MLC Govindaraju after the diary was found at the residence the MLC during a raid by the Income Tax department in 2016. 

Last year, the state government was rushed forward to complete the steel flyover in a time span of two years from Chalukya circle to Hebbal in the state capital at a cost of Rs 1791 crores amid protests by the people and legal battle. Later, the government decided to raise the total length of the bridge from 6.7 to 7.7 kilometers raising to total cost of the project from Rs 1791 crores to Rs 2100 crores. As many as 800 trees were required to be cut down for the project those come in the area where the bridge was expected to be build.
