Nanjangud/Gundlupet: Polling for two assembly seats in Karnataka state has began at Nanjangud and Gundlupet assembly constituencies on Sunday morning amid tight security arrangements to prevent any unpleasant incident. However, there are reports on clashes between Congress Party and BJP workers at Belur polling station located in Gundlupet taluk. Technical errors in some voting machines have delayed polling in some of the polling booths in Gundlupet.

The polling has started at 07.00 AM and will continue until 05.00 PM. Demo polling has also been conducted in various polling stations in the presence of party leaders as there were reports on credibility of the electronic voting machines.

By-election is being held after the premature death of Minister HS Mahadeva Prasad who was representing the Gundlupet constituency whereas Nanjangud assembly seat remained vacant following the resignation of elected representative, former minister Srinivasa Prasad.  BJP and Congress party have come face to face in the elections following political and regional issues.

The election results will be declared on April 13 and political future of the candidates, Srinivasa Prasad, Geetha Mahadeva Prasad, Kalale Keshavamurthy and Niranjan will be decided on the same day. Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is being used for first time in Karnataka state in the two by-elections being held. All public functions, events have been postponed following the by-elections.
