Raipur: A security personnel today snatched a firearm from a naxalite and fired at the ultras, forcing them to retreat in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, police said.

A police official said five naxalites masquerading as villagers attacked constable Bhimaram Kunjam at Hitwar village in Maoist-hit Kuakonda.

Undaunted, Kunjam snatched the pistol and fired at them, forcing them to flee, the police official said, adding that the constable had gone to the village for gathering information.

Superintendent of Police Kamalochan Kashyap announced an award of Rs 10,000 for Kunjam, the official said.

The official said the pistol belonged to sub-inspector who was killed in a Naxal attack in Kuakonda on February 28, 2014.
