Mangaluru: Food and civil supplies department has planned to purchase ragi and tur dal directly from farmers starting next week.

Minister U T Khader said the department is planning to procure 2 lakh tones of Ragi and 11 metric tonnes of tur dal this season. “Ragi will be procured at Rs 2,300 per quintal, tur dal Rs 6,000 a quintal. While the centre will give Rs 1,900 per quintal of ragi and Rs 5,550 for tur dal, the state government will bear the difference amount, the decision was made to help the farmers get a good price for their produce,” he said.

PDS beneficiaries will receive 2kg ragi and 1kg tur dal the minister added.

The government’s move will also prevent the possibility of sudden crash in prices of ragi during the harvesting season, he added.
