Bengaluru: Food grain worth Rs.12 crore was infested with insects due to the negligence of the government.

The food grains were meant to fill the hungry stomach of the poor which is now rotten in the godown. More than 30000 quintal of wheat, sugar, salt, millet, oil and grams which was scheduled to be distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS) to the poor and needy is now rotten.

Though the state government had increased the allocation of rice from five kgs to seven kgs from July 2017, the distribution plan was pending for the other food grain resulting in the spoilage.

A report from the ‘Food Safety Laboratory’ reveals that the food grain contains insects and worms and is not fit for consumption even by the animals. The food grains have to be destroyed as there no other way to make use of them. The loss will sum up to Rs.12 crores.
