Mangaluru: Despite opposition, trees were cut on Wednesday to build a new deputy commissioner’s office complex here.
The trees were cut with the help of wood cutting saw machine. However, public were not allowed to enter the area due to tight security.
The proposed plan of building a new DC office for the district needs to chop off over 666 trees near Padil here.
Forest department had conducted a public hearing to seek their opinion to bring down over 666 trees to build new DC office here. The situation went chaotic as two groups got into a heated argument regarding this.
The Karnataka high court and Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act, 1976 had made public hearing mandatory if the number trees to be felled is more than 50 hectare.
Though 189 people submitted their opinion, many felt that the hearing should be held again considering the commotion prevailed during the session.
