“June 8th – World Ocean Day”

Mangaluru: Every year on June 8th “World Ocean Day” is celebrated to stop pollution of the ocean and to spread awareness about it. On this occasion, this report aims to spread awareness among the public, tourists and localities on prevention of sea pollution within the coastal limits of Mangaluru.

Today is “World Ocean day” which is celebrated to stop the pollution of the oceans. With our aim to create a clean and beautiful India, we must also strive to maintain a clean and pollution free ocean which is so close to use.

The length of coast from Talapady in Dakshina Kannada to Shiroor in Udupi is more or less 168kms. Of this coast, Ullal, Someshwara, Panambur, Tannirbavi, Sasihitlu, Kaup, Malpe, Maravanthe have become famous through tourism. The beauty of the sea is the pleasure that attracts tourists here.

Let clean seas become a priority

Clean seas should be our priority. The sea coast should be clean. The fishing boats that travel to the sea must give special importance to maintain a clean ocean.

Even though the fishing boats have taken complimentary action in this regard, even more awareness in required to make it effective. If the fishing boat carries fishing without causing pollution, a big fear will be averted. Even the huge ships entering New Mangalore Port must follow this example.

Fast evacuation of ships caught in danger

The salvaging of ships and boats stuck in danger and sinking should be carried with haste. This is necessary, because in the recent ship tragedies that occurred along Karavali, there was oil spill that occurred first thus polluting the water.

The danger of the same polluted water reaching the fishes which in turn will reaching  the human body exists. Hence there is a need to give additional importance to the conservation and cleanliness of the seas.

Sea coast needs to be clean

The coast along Karavali is important tourism hub. People from across the world come here.

There are a few among the many who spend hours on the coast, coming equipped with food and drinks and vacate by creating garbage. A few others will go ahead and try to dispose of the garbage in the sea. There should be a ban on such activities. By maintaining a clean beach let us clean up the oceans.

World Ocean Day celebration in 2008

World Ocean Day was first celebrated unofficially in 1992 by NGO’s, groups and institutions in many countries. Later, around 2000 institutions worldwide celebrated the World Ocean Day in the form of demand and movement for three years to spread awareness about the day and gain the recognition ot the UNO. As a result, UNO declared June 8th to be celebrated as the World Ocean Day in all the countries and thereby gave start to the action of conservation of the oceans.
