Mangaluru: The repair work of the massive retaining wall on the outside of Mangaluru International Airport runway near Kolambe Vittlabettu, which sustained cracks due to torrential rain last month has started at brisk pace. The repair work has been taken up by the airport authority. The lower part of the retaining wall has been further concretized and the repair work of the cracks on the wall has begun.
Due to the May 29th incessant rain, the force of the rain water flowing down from the runway through the retaining wall inflicted cracks on the wall near Kolambe Vittlabettu. As a result, eight houses were damaged in the area of Vittlabettu.
Using pipe, the concrete was filled into the cracks on the upper portion of the retaining wall near the runway, to strengthen it. Also, the airport authority repaired the mud road that connected with Vittlabettu residents, which was washed off by the rains. A bulldozer was pressed into action for four days to deposit mud at the location from where the road was washed off.
Though the mud brought down by the rainwater has been removed, the problems have not yet been solved. Also, since the mud got deposited into a well, the drinking water within the well has now become polluted due to which the residents have to face the problem of getting drinking water.
