Mangalurean Shriyana is Commonwealth Chess Champion

Mangaluru: Eight-year-old Shriyana Mallya, who is a talented chess player, has made everyone proud by winning the ‘Commonwealth Chess Championship 2018’ title in the under 8 girls’ category, held at the Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Delhi, which concluded on July 3rd.
Shriyana, is the proud daughter of Sandeep and Nandini Mallya couple from Hoigebazar and is a student of Lourdes Central School.
Shriyana, with 5 wins and two draws was declared the winner. Sri Harini, another participant from Karnataka, won the fourth place. Shriyana was ranked 16th at the start of the under-8 event were a total 40 participants participated. Including India, there were participants from Pakistan, Srilanka, Kenya, Australia, Uganda and other countries.
Last year in April, Shriyana won bronze medals at the world school chess championship and Blitz tournament held in Lasi, Romania. I April this year, she was part of the Indian team that won bronze in the under eight category at the Asian school chess championship held at Thailand.
She was coached by Gahan M G and Sameer Ghotane of Chess SaGa, Bengaluru and was the national school chess champion as well as Karnataka state chess champion in the under-7 girls’ age category.
