Mangaluru: A team of well dressed ladies with coloured hair and neckties have been witnessed around the city begging for financial help from the general public. The beggars in question claim that they are from Ranipur in Rajasthan and due to floods, have lost everything in their native place and are presently destitute.

Sticking to their story of having lost all possessions including their house, the team moves around in the city equipped with Xerox copies of their story and seeks alms. They normally target areas where college students and young people gather.

The letters carried by these women do not have any letterheads nor do they have any police permission. They only claim their location of origin but fail to produce any identity proof to prove their claims.

8 persons warned

A local identified as Sooraj published on his Facebook page a video on the beggars thus alerting the police. As a result, a case was registered; the beggars were rounded up and later sent them away with a strict warning, informed  Kadri police station staff to ‘Udayavani’.

Modus Operandi

According to Sooraj, many such people have been making rounds around the city since last 8 months. If a donor paid Rs.100, the beggars later change that number on their Xerox copies to Rs. 1000 thereby influencing the next hapless donor to pay more, he said.
