New Delhi: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today decided to donate his one month’s salary towards the relief work in flood-hit Kerala. He took the decision after attending a review meeting on the flood situation in the state.

“Called a review meeting on Kerala floods with Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha (Harivansh) and other senior officials of Rajya Sabha and Vice President Secretariat and decided to donate a month’s salary for relief measures,” Naidu, who is also the Chairman of the Upper House, tweeted.

The vice president gets around Rs 4 lakh per month as salary. The deadly monsoon rains in Kerala have claimed 216 lives since August 8 and has displaced over 7.24 lakh people from their homes.

The southern state is facing its worst flood in 100 years with 80 dams opened and all rivers in spate. A body blow has been dealt to the state known for its scenic natural beauty, with its infrastructure, standing crops and tourism facilities getting severely hit.

Judges of the Supreme Court have also decided to contribute towards the relief efforts.
