Rumour kills a youth

Mangaluru: Overwhelmed by guilt, a youth committed suicide believing that his girl friend had ended her life by jumping into a river because of him. He has left behind a 15-page death note, prior to his death. The incident occurred at Addur Kinnimajalu near Gurpur in the early hours on Wednesday August 29th.

The deceased has been identified as Diwakar (32), son of Gopal and it was later realized that the girl he believed to have died is alive.  The lady in question used to frequently meet Diwakar who used to live alone. There is information that the deceased youth had acted in a Tulu film.

Incident synopsis

On Tuesday, the lady stayed overnight at Diwakar’s place. But early morning the next day, the duo ended up fighting over a silly issue which did not end up well. Diwakar, in a fit of rage, stabbed her with a knife and as a result, she angrily left his home.

On Wednesday morning around 5 am, some young men coming to Gurpur saw blood stains on the road and conveyed information to the police. Apparently, some locals had seen a lady walking on the road in the early hours. This led to the birth of a rumour that the said lady had jumped into Phalguni River began to spread. According to the police, the rumour reached Diwakar, who overcome with guilt and fear killed himself believe the police.

Reportedly, in the death note, Diwakar mentioned that he had not committed any wrongs and that he had never done any injustice or cheated anyone. It is understood that the injured lady reached her home safety with the help of some people.
