Mangaluru: The mid-term holidays for students of primary and high schools in Dakshina Kannada district, originally scheduled between October 7 to 21 has been reduced by seven days i.e from October 14 to 21, to make up for the deficit in the school studies, resulting out of the holidays granted owing to the torrential rains.

An order to this effect was passed by the Deputy director of public instruction of Dakshina Kannada district, and schools have been intimated of the modified holidays through the block education officers of respective taluks.

In Dakshina Kannada district itself, school students had got nine days of holidays in the current academic year between May and August. Sullia, Puttur, and Bantwal being more-affected by the rains, schools in these areas had granted more holidays to the students. Owing to these holidays, the syllabus supposed to be taught to the students has not been completed. The reduced holidays intends to make up for this deficit. Furthermore, schools have been given the liberty to conduct full-day classes on Saturdays to make up for the deficit in the studies.

The letter has also directed schools to chalk out the schedule for the mid-term examinations taking into consideration the extended duty hours till October 14.

In Udupi district, the Deputy director of public instruction has directed schools to make up for the deficit in studies either by conducting classes on Saturday afternoons or by cancelling any other holidays. A total of three holidays was given to schools in the district because of the heavy rains.
