Major mishap averted after a container ship springs a leak at NMPT

Panambur: A major incident was dodged at New Mangalore Port after a container ship suffered a tear along its  hull and leaked more than 150 liters of oil into the sea her on Saturday November 3rd.

MV X-press Brahmaputra is the ship which suffered the tear and sprung an oil leak at NMPT. It was sailing from Colombo Sri Lanka. The mishap occurred when the ship was returning after loading the container at NMPT port.

Reportedly, the tug was taking the ship the cargo jetty no.2 ship hit the wall of the jetty and suffered a tear thereby spring an oil spill. However, the staff of the ship and locals became aware of the situation immediately and prevented the leakage. They also made sure that the oil spilled did mopt spread out spread out into the sea.

The leaked oil is suspected to be fuel or lubricant used in running the ship’s engines and equipment.  

ICG take precautionary measures

 “Very limited clean oil measureable perhaps in liters has spilled. It is dry bulk berth and not an oil jetty. As a precautionary measure oil boom has been put around the vessel,” said S. S. Dasila, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka.

Situation under control

The NMPT authorities stated in a press release that the vessel MV X-press Brahmaputra sustained damage to her port  side hull today morning, while sailing out. The vessel was brought back to access the extent of damage. There are no major concerns as NMPT officials acted professionally in time, to tackle the situation. The issue is under control.”
