Bengaluru: The Legal Metrology Department officials raided and booked 172 cases against jewelers, including few of the top jewelers for allegedly violating the laws.

The departments divisions in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi and Kalaburagi, on Monday and Tuesday conducted the raids at several outlets across the state in accordance with the instructions given by the Controller of Legal Metrology.

A press release released by the department stated that most jewelery shops were using unverified and non-standard weighing instruments. The minimum mandatory weights prescribed with a view to crosscheck the weighing instruments used in the bullion trade transaction were not maintained in most of outlets. The department conducted around 700 inspections and have registered cases against 172 jewelers across the state.
