Bantwal: The inaugural event of Indira Canteen at BC Road witnessed some ugly scenes after a verbal spat erupted between party workers of Congress and BJP allegedly over former minister and former MLA of Bantwal B Ramanath Rai’s presence at the event.
It is gathered that the BJP members, in a letter written to the Tahsildar had appealed that the former minister stays away from the event. Chaos prevailed here when Ramanath Rai arrived at the event venue which led to a heated exchange of words between supporters of both parties. Timely intervention of police prevented the incident from snowballing any further and later Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister UT Khader formally inaugurated the canteen.
Meanwhile, Bantwal BJP MLA Rajesh Naik and MP Nalin Kumar abstained from the formal inaugural function following the arguments.
Regretting the shameful incident, an apologetic Khader said that the event should have happened in unity and at the same time he urged people not to blow the matter out of proportion.
