Mangaluru: P Karunakaran who is the MP of Kasaragod has instantly earned much admiration from the netizens on social media for initiating a debate on the inclusion of the Tulu language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution during the Parlimentary Session on Wednesday. An audio file of his speech in the parliament has presently gone viral on Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter.

In his debate at the parlimentary MP Karunakaran said, “Tulu is a Dravidian language spoken mainly in the Southwest region of Karnataka and also in the Kasargod district of Kerala. The Tulu-speaking region is often referred as Tulu Nadu. The native speakers of Tulu are also called as Tuluva.”

Keeping forth relevant statistics the MP said that according to 2011 census report, there are 1,846,427 native Tulu speakers in India. According to an estimate report in 2009, Tulu is spoken by 3 to 5 million people across the world.  Therefore he urged the government to include the language into the 8th schedule.

Meanwhile, Udupi –Chikmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel attracted much ire from the netizens for their silence and their failure to raise any voice in favour of the inclusion of the Tulu language in the eighth schedule.

DYFI State President Muneer Katipalla posted on Facebook, “Kerala MP representing CPM has raised the issue of Tulu in the eighth schedule of the Constitution. We have not seen our MPs from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi raising their voice. Our MPs are concerned only about cattle, religion and corpse. When will they raise genuine issues?”

Nalin’s statement on dollar sliding before rupee and the never completing work on Pumpwell flyover attracted much ridicule on social media.
