B’luru prison staff arrested for selling ganja to inmates

Bengaluru: The Parappana Agrahara police have arrested a physical education instructor at the Parappana Agrahara police station in Bengaluru after it was found that he had been smuggling and selling marijuana to the prison inmates. Reportedly, the accused identified as B Kumaraswamy was working in the prison since the last five years.

As per the police, Kumaraswamy gave 4 packets of 100 grams of ganja each to the convicts Manjunath and Krishna on Aug 21st. Once the issue was informed to the SP of the prison, a complaint was filed against the accused. As the officials were alerted of the crime by the accused, Kumaraswamy went absconding and a hunt was launched to capture him. Finally he was arrested in Halamadenahalli of Hiriyur taluk on Wednesday.

Addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the South east division, MV Boralingaiah said that the accused had been peddling ganja to the convicts of the prison. The accused is a native of Hiriyur near Chitradurga, was apprehended in Alamadenahalli village after the smuggled drugs were first found with prisoners four months back. Further investigation revealed that the drugs had been brought in and sold by the accused.

Modus operandi

Speaking on the modu operandi of the accused, the SP said, “He used to conceal the drugs in his clothes and avoid security checks while gaining entry into the prison and hand over the packets to the convicts in return for cash. The racket was busted when the prison officials during a random check caught Manjunath, a convict with four packets of marijuana, weighing 100 grams each, while he was working in computer server room on August 21.”

The police are on the lookout for Kumaraswamy’s associates while the accused has been brought to Bengaluru.
