Maid commits suicide after employer accuses her of theft

Bengaluru: Days after being accused of theft by her employer a 48-year-old domestic help ended her life by setting herself ablaze at her residence in Viveknagar police station limits on Friday night.
The deceased identified as G. Tangamani, a mother of three worked as a maid at the residence of Sandhya, a doctor who runs a clinic in Koramangala.
A few days ago Sandhya noticed that her gold bracelet was missing and she suspected that Tangamani had stolen it. Despite the accusations, Tangamani continued to go to work as usual.
On Friday, Sandhya is said to have threatened to lodge a police complaint if the bracelet was not returned to her. Later in the day two men, two men who claimed they were from the police department, visited Tangamani’s residence and started questioning her. Following this, a dejected Tangamani is said to have set herself on fire while her family members were asleep. Her husband, Gopi and neighbours woke up when they heard her screams. Though they doused the fire and rushed her to the hospital she died on the way.
Police have booked Dr Sandhya for abetment to suicide following a complaint by Gopi.
